Mathematical Modeling


The Academic Master’s Degree in Mathematical Modeling presents an integrated, coherent and well-defined training profile, being based on the natural confluence of consolidated fields of knowledge. With an unprecedented approach, the Master’s Degree in Mathematical Modeling integrates into Applied Mathematics the body of knowledge of Computer and Information Sciences, with contexts of applications of social, economic, biological and health sciences.

Graduates in mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics, computing, engineering, physics, economics and related fields, who wish to work with scientific and technological research in public or private institutions, supporting decision-making processes in all spheres, or who wish to continue their academic training at the PhD level in the field.

In the application form, in addition to personal data and information about your background, applicants must submit a letter describing their reasons for applying for the program and how they intend to apply the knowledge acquired (it is suggested to prepare the text in advance and paste it in the appropriate form field). Registration will be formalized by uploading the following documentation on the Selection Process registration page, available on the School’s website:
a.    Identity Document;
b.    CPF;
c.    Passport (foreign applicants);
d.    Social Name inclusion form and other documents;
e.    Medical Report (persons with Disabilities);
f.    Curriculum Vitae or Lattes (;
g.    Graduate Diploma. In case of a course taken abroad, the document must be consularized by Brazil’s representation (Embassies/Consulates) in the country of origin of the Diploma or apostilled, according to the Hague Convention, and presented with its sworn translation;
h.    Applicants in the final phase of an Undergraduate course may submit, for registration to the Selection Process, a statement with the estimated date of completion of the course (issued less than 60 days). For the registration to take place, it will be mandatory to present the Diploma or Statement containing the graduation date;
i.    Undergraduate Academic Transcript;
j.    Academic Transcript of other Graduate courses (optional);
k.    Result with the score and classification in National and/or International Exams, such as ANPAD, ANPEC, GRE and POSCOMP conducted from 2018 (optional);

1.    The documents must be scanned, saved in PDF format and attached to the Registration Form;
2.    The maximum upload size allowed for each document is 1.5 MB;
3.    Photos of documents will not be accepted;
4.    Documents that are double-sided or longer than one (1) page must be scanned in a single file (e.g. ID, passport, Diploma, etc.);
5.    Documents that are illegible, incomplete or outside the above standards will invalidate the applicant’s application;
6.    Applicants should consult the status of the documentation submitted through the website, on the “Visão Geral” menu, “Acompanhe sua inscrição” link. The documents will be verified within three (3) business days.

Applicants for the Master’s Degree will be selected by a Selection Committee composed of Program Professors, according to the criteria specified below, all stages being eliminatory:
a.    Documentary analysis;
b.    Performance in the Leveling Module (Summer Course)
c.    Interview.
Stage 1 – Documentary analysis
Stage 2 – Approval in the leveling course (Summer Course)
The purpose of the course is to provide the newcomer with a complement to the applicant’s academic background in Mathematics and Computer Science, favoring learning and academic performance during the course.
The Summer Course is compulsory, and the Selection Committee may nominate you to take one subject or both (see chart below). The Selection Committee will carry out the applicant’s approval in the Master’s Selection Process based on their performance in the Summer Course. The course has a duration of four (4) weeks, with a total class load of sixty (60) hours.

Only applicants classified at this stage will be invited to the interview.

Stage 3 – Interview
The selection interview will take place within the period established in the public notice.
Applicants residing in other states will be able to carry out the Interview via Skype.
The Interviews will be scheduled by email or telephone contact by the Course Coordination.

The mean final grade will be composed of the mean grade achieved by analyzing items established in the public notice, with seven (7.0) being the minimum mean grade for approval.
The criteria will be judged by a Committee that will assess the applicants’ ability to analyze scenarios and support decision making in data-intensive situations, as well as any significant contributions to research in the area.

In case of a tie, the classification will be defined based on the following criteria:
a.    Higher grade in the documentary analysis;
b.    Higher grade in the subject of Fundamentals of Mathematics: an introduction to analysis;
c.    Higher grade in the interview;
d.    If the tie persists, the age criterion will be used, and the older student will be selected.

The final result of the Master’s Degree Selection will be announced on February 17, 2020, through an alphabetical list of those selected in the Selection Process. Successful applicants will be contacted by FGV’s School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp) by telephone and/or email and will be required to confirm their intention to enroll at the Academic Records Office (SRA) within the period set in this document.

To make the Enrollment effective, the applicant must access the Selection Process website – > Resultados > Pré-matrícula – and book an appointment at the Department of Academic Records, according to the date and time of their choice.
a.    The scheduling period is available in the Timetable;
b.    Scheduling should be carried out in advance, depending on the demand of applicants and availability of dates and times;
c.    Only duly scheduled applicants will be served;
d.    Applicants who fail to comply with the scheduled time or to present the documentation for enrollment, as established in the public notice, should wait for the availability of service, in the absence of the applicant to be served following the time assigned to them.
The registration will be formalized upon delivery of the following documentation to the Department of Academic Records (SRA): Applicants must submit to FGV SRA the original copies of all documents listed below, for the purposes of authentication of the documents uploaded on the selection process website:

Brazilian Applicants
a.    Two (2) recent 3x4 photos;
b.    Official Identity Document (passports will not be accepted);
c.    CPF;
d.    Birth or Marriage Certificate, according to marital status;
e.    Social Name inclusion form;
f.    Medical Report (Persons with Disabilities);
g.    Graduate Diploma. In case of a course taken abroad, the document must be consularized by Brazil’s representation (Embassies/Consulates) in the country of origin of the Diploma or apostilled, according to the Hague Convention, and presented with its sworn translation;

Foreign Applicants
a.    Two (2) recent 3x4 photos;
b.    Passport;
c.    Temporary Student Visa;
d.    CPF;
e.    National Migration Registry (RNM);
f.    Birth or Marriage Certificate, according to marital status;
g.    Social Name inclusion form;
h.    Medical Report (Persons with Disabilities);
i.    Graduate Diploma. In case of a course taken abroad, the document must be consularized by Brazil’s representation (Embassies/Consulates) in the country of origin of the Diploma or apostilled, according to the Hague Convention, and presented with its sworn translation;
j.    Minimum insurance policy of thirty thousand euro (€30,000) or forty-two thousand U.S. dollars ($42,000), contemplating transfer to the country of origin.
The following documents must be presented at the time of registration and are available for printing on the Pre-Registration link:
a.    Two (2) copies of the Educational Services Agreement (signed);
b.    Proof of payment of the first (1st) monthly installment;
c.    Enrollment Form (signed);
d.    Release of Liability (signed);
e.    Declaration of Subsistence (for foreign applicants only).

Registration Fee:
Seventy-five reais (R$75.00), for bank payment slips issued from 12/08 to 13/09/2019, until 6 p.m.
One hundred reais (R$100.00), for bank payment slips issued after 6 p.m. on 13/09 to 01/11/2019, until 6 p.m. Payment may be made by credit card, at bank branches or via Internet, until the payment deadline set by the bank.

The cancellation of the registration must be made by the contractor, via request filed at the Department of Academic Records (SRA). For income for Legal Entities, please consult our financial service at the Department of Academic Records (SRA).


During the selection process, the Coordination of the Academic Master’s Degree in Mathematical Modeling will promote the Open Day, an informative session in which applicants interested in the course will have the opportunity to learn more about School facilities, the professors, and the research programs, as well as obtaining more detailed information about the program and exchange experiences with students and alumni.

Single (cash) payment of R$33,120.00, 3 installments of R$11,400.00, or 24 installments of R$1,500.00.


The values and rules for obtaining and maintaining the scholarship are subject to the standards established by the public development agencies, namely CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher-Education Personnel / Academic Excellence Program).

Partnerships with a number of private institutions have also made it possible over the past few years to provide additional scholarships.
FGV EMAp may grant subsidies of up to one hundred percent (100%) of the monthly tuition fees, through availability of resources, according to the rating in the Selection Process. Master’s program Scholarships are renewed on a quarterly basis, based on the students’ progress, performance, and full dedication to the program.

To obtain the Master’s degree, the student must obtain at least 26 credits, distributed as follows: 1 credit related to the Scientific Methodology subject, at least 1 credit related to participation in the Research Seminar, and at least 24 credits corresponding to other subjects, at least 12 of which must correspond to Central Subjects. One subject of 45 hours is worth 3 credits.
